Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

Well guys our VC-10 proto is 3/4 cut and sitting on the bench.

I was hoping that i could get started on it today, but sadly work got in the way again.

Maybe Keith can come in on this one with his VC-10

Will try to get some pics on here tomorrow.

Best regards,
Doc.

Re: Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

OK,

finally the world left me alone for a while this afternoon, so thought i would try to get the fuse at leats put together, even if it wasnt glued.

As it turns out, the build is a walk in the park...

Nose build right side, left side is clipped on not glued so far.

to give you an idea of scale...the bench is 3.2m long

Nah, I'm perfectly willing to go the '60s B.O.A.C. Whisperliner route - no need for fancy drogues !snicker !

Re: Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

Greetings Joomalies

I had the good fortune to get a close look at the VC-10 the other afternoon. You do not get an idea of the size from the photos, it's hooge! yet it only weighs a few of your Earth grams. the constuction method needs to be seen to be beleived too. It is clearly the work of a genius, and will need only the simplest of instructions to assemble.........Can't wait to see those bogies full of 2" wheels lowering out of it as it flares into "Area 51"........will you dare let me have a go with it Mike?
Oh! and are the wings going to come off for transport? otherwize I won't be able to get in my resonably priced car!
Nice one, keep 'em coming.

Mike, Give me another clue for the length and wingspan, I can't see the both ends of the bench in the photo.

Re: Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

Sorry Matt,

PC been down, only now back online...

Fuse 2.2m

Wingspan 1.9m (remember its hfairly swept)

suspecting 2EDF 64`s shoudl cut the mustard, but have designed it to carry 4 if need be.

Fuse horizontal 175mm, vertical 200mm

Tailfin 450mm long. 350mm high

Tail span 680mm ish

so fairly large, with a removable wing this time!..lol

hope that helps.

Doc.

Smashing Mike, really top stuff. I hope this works out well for you. One thing I don't have is an airliner.

Keep up the good work

Re: Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

Hi Mike
Your prototype looks really impressive.  I'm really jealous.  My VC10 has been stalled a bit due to work and other things but I'm back on now.  Hope to have some pics up soon.

Re: Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

well guys,

i was going to post then next few steps in teh VC-10, but my homospasmidoc archamedes, hampster powered, over grown, glorified ZX81 of a laptop wont let me...

so will have to do it in the morning on my proper PC.

Kieth know the feeling about work getting in the way of having fun, doing 17 hour days at the mo....need sleep

...looking forward to seeing yours.....(VC-10 that is)

Re: Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

Looking good Mike, the last photo really starts to show its size. So are they going to be your actual operating fowler flaps? What do you guess the weight will be?

Re: Vickers VC-10 Twin/Quad EDF Proto build

Hey Gaz, your more than welcome, and also thanks fro teh Earl Grey!

Wife B-Day, so had to run, in true husband fashion, always leave the important stuff to teh lest sec!!!

Keith,

thanks friend...its all taking shape now.

How its built is a bit clever (or obvious, depending on how you lok at it) because were limited to 53mm in thickness of XPS (the orange stuff) we have to make it for example, left sidr 53mm think 150mm tall, on that with the CNC machine we cut the shape obvioulsy, then make a tap and slot affair, allowing us to use another part to slide in to the slots, allowing you to fitt the tops and bottoms, also with teh Depron centre support glued in all the way down, the structure becomes very still, and as long as you build it first on its side on teh bench, it will come out straight (or at least as stright as your bench) then stand it up on its top and start glueing in the other side sections, locking the shape and straightness in...

So far, apart from a few CNC errors on my part its been a doddle to put together.

However, on reflexion the engines are going to be more challanging, i didnt think that through fully so will have re-design that part again.

Im dying to see your VC-10, will be a great comparison of building styles. Maybe we should get together and do a flyin with them, i have the pilots with scale Jet fighters to do a formation, could be a complete hoot!

so far, mine weighs, as is 31.1oz, so pretty pleased

Best regards,
Doc.
